The operation of waste water treatment plants results in direct emissions, from the biological processes, of greenhouse gases (GHG) such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), as well as indirect emissions resulting from energy generation.

To measure waste water climate neutrality is a challenge. GHG emissions should account for the energy used, the process emissions, the chemicals, road transport and the emissions embedded in the equipment, concrete and pipes. Waste water needs to be conveyed to sewage treatment plants and treated wastewater must meet the aesthetic standards of the ambient environment for receiving water bodies.

CO2-neutral wastewater treatment plants can be obtained by improving the recovery of internal wastewater energy resources (COD, nutrients, energy) and reducing energy demand as well as direct emissions of the greenhouse gases N2O and CH4.
